The white LEDs create a shimmering light in the water

This aquarium is made from thick and strong glass. The curved corners on this aquarium gives the overall unit an expensive and elegant look without actually costing a small fortune. It’s worth noting that the curved corners don’t just look good, but they are wonderful when you need to clean the glass because you can easily get into the corners and clean algae from the glass.

The lighting system that comes with this aquarium uses a LED strip that features 9 white LEDs and 6 blue LEDs. The white light mimics natural sunlight bouncing off the water, while the blue lighting replicates the moon light.

On the back of the aquarium, there is a plastic housing unit where you can find the filter and the pump. It is because of this hidden compartment that you have a uncluttered looking fish tank. The filtration system runs silently, but it also utilizes all three stages of filtration: biological, chemical, and mechanical. This ensures your water is clean, aerated, and safe for your fish.

What Others Say

When looking at what people had to say about the Marineland Portrait 5-Gallon Aquarium, many customers had wonderful things to say about it. Most customers report they keep betta fish in the tank, and there is plenty of room for the fish to swim.

Customers like the curved corners, stating it makes the tank look modern and elegant. They commented that though the base is made from plastic, it doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy. They liked that this is a portrait tank, meaning it doesn’t take up as much space on the counter top as a traditional horizontal tank would.

People like that the filter runs virtually silently, which allows them to sleep or watch television with no problems.

Several customers reported they were able to find the replaceable filters at their local pet store, which was appreciated because they didn’t have to worry about trying to find them online. Customers also liked the motor of the filter has four suction cup feet to hold it in place.

Although the majority of customers had positive things to say about this aquarium, there was a small fraction of customers who had some issues with the aquarium. The most common complaint people had was that the tank was difficult to clean.

They commented that the location of the filter (at the top of the aquarium) would collect every bit of waste and debris. This caused the aquarium to smell over time and felt the process to clean it on a weekly basis was more work than they anticipated.

One person reported their tank leaked the first day they received it. They went on to describe how they found a crack hidden in the rear chamber. The customer reported they tried to seal it with silicone but it wouldn’t stop leaking. Another person commented their tank cracked for no reason.

This person said they had the tank for only four months. Upon further investigation, it would be nearly impossible for glass to crack for no reason, so it would lead us to believe the tank was left in a cold room, but the water inside was pretty warm (above 80 degrees).

Final Thoughts

If you’re searching for a lovely aquarium that is not going to take up too much space in your home, then the Marineland Portrait 5-Gallon Aquarium is a great option. The sleek, curved corners on this aquarium makes the unit look fancier and more expensive than it truly is.

We like this particular aquarium because it does look so nice. Unlike other aquariums you may come across, this unit isn’t over-crowded with a bulky filtration system or pump. Why? Because they are hidden behind a panel in the back.

We also like this tank because it comes with its own lighting system. The lighting system features an LED light strip that mimics the natural sunlight, but it can also mimic the look of the moon’s gentle glow. We do want to point out that the lighting system is intended for visual appeal. If you are hoping to grow plants, you will need a stronger lighting system.

Of all the nano aquariums currently available on the market today, we feel this is a wonderful option. It’s sleek, visually appealing, and it offers plenty of swimming space for your fish. The kit includes a pump and filtration system, which are neatly tucked behind a back panel. To add a bit of class to any space, this is a great option.
