Sometimes what you need is a bit of colour to liven up the place. You can build the most creative rock structures you can imagine but adding Coralline Algae will certainly add that wow factor. For those looking to buy Coralline Algae this review is for you.
In today’s review, we are going to take a closer look at Coralline Algae in a Bottle. Not exactly a catchy name, but lets see if Coralline Algae in a Bottle is more than meets the eye and run through this unique products properties and At the end, we’ll give you our recommendation on whether or not this product is worthy of your time and consideration.
Coralline Algae is a type of red Algae in the order Corallinales. The colors of these algae are most typically pink, or some other shade of red, but you do see some species that can be purple, yellow, blue, white, or gray-green. It is a desirable algae to have in a saltwater aquarium and its growth is an indication of a growing ecosystem and a properly matured marine fish tank. It is commonly introduced into an aquarium by placing live rock into the aquarium. Coralline Algae enters the system as one of the many beneficial “hitchhiker’s” on live rocks as well as on the shells of snails.
Coralline Algae can be purchased in many different colours and typically comes attached to rocks, this particular product however comes in a bottle and in two very bold colours; Pink Fusion and Purple Helix. Developed by a company called ARC this product contains actual live algae spores whereas other products we have seen are simply a mixture of calcium and magnesium in order to give the desired look without necessarily the benefits.
Introducing live elements into a tank can be a little worrying, but given that the company behind this product are a licensed aquaculture laboratory licensed under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Agriculture, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission I wouldn't be concerned about using this product in my tank.
Containing 6 different species of Coralline Algae per bottle, the bottle you select should stay very close to the advertised colour. Differences in lighting and magnesium levels do have some effect on the colour but kept at constant levels this should not be noticeable.
In addition to looking fantastic the Coralline Algae also aids in establishing your tanks biological filtration, by providing fresh living bacteria. In addition to the above the Algae also helps improve the overall quality of the water by controlling the ammonia and nitrite levels.
Most marine bacteria will not survive without oxygen for a long period of time and as such this product is bottled at source when an order is made. This then gives you approximately 2 weeks to use the bottle, a single bottle contains enough Coralline Algae for 50 gallons of water. There is also no reason why you cannot use two different coloured bottles in a tank for that extra special look.
When looking at what people had to say about the Coralline Algae in a bottle, we were impressed to see the majority of consumers had fantastic things to say about it. Customers who have used the product and had a little patience saw truly great results.
There were a few people who mentioned that they did not see any results, but this was after a relatively short period of time. It does look as if patience is key with product, give it a few weeks or months and the results speak for themselves.
There were a number of people who were at first hesitant about purchasing the product but ultimately given time found that the claims were well founded and the product was indeed fantastic.
One customer in particular noted that instead of using 1 bottle per 50 gallons of water it had a much quicker effect if used in 35 gallons of water. This view was echoed a number of times and therefore would also be our suggestion.
Although the majority of consumers who purchased the Coralline Algae had positive things to say about it, there were some people who were disappointed with the product. Of these critical reviews, a few people said there was no evidence of algae in the tank albeit being only a week after introducing it into the tank.
One customer mentioned that they were disappointed in the product in comparison to purchasing a live rock with Coralline already attached. This alternative is certainly a good option and one worth exploring but it can become very costly.
A common theme among the negative reviews was the amount of time it takes to see growth within the tank, which is actually quite interesting. As mentioned previously those who had a little patience and waited in some cases up to 3 months saw great results.
Coralline Algae in a Bottle is designed to 'pimp' your fish tank with bold and stand out colours. It is a fantastic alternative to purchasing live rocks with coralline already embedded.
We like this particular product because it is easy to use and the results speak for themselves. Yes, there are lots of factors that surround growing Coralline Algae and this product does need some patience but it's worth the wait.
As mentioned before if your tank is larger than 35 gallons don't forget to buy a couple of bottles and mix the two for a very unique looking tank.
If growing Coralline Algae yourself is either too time consuming or you don't want to introduce live elements into your tank then it is worth taking a look at LifeRocks. They are essentially manmade rocks decorated to look like Coralline Algae has taken hold and a great alternative to consider.
